Another painting from Costumed Figure Painting Class at the museum. I really enjoyed this one and liked the way it came out. I've got several others squirreled away that... didn't turn out so well. The model that night was Liza. She did a great job. Her daughter posed for us a couple weeks later. She was great too.

Another card for FFG's Lord of the Rings Card game. This was my first try at horses. Drawing and painting horses always kind of freaked me out. Looking at this piece again, the one in the back could use another pass but I'm pretty happy with the guy up front.

Over the weekend Jerry Stinson and his wonderful wife Karen had a small group of artist out to their home for an afternoon of costumed figure painting. It made for a Great day. Perfect weather, tasty food, great company… and painting. Our model was Carolyn. She always brings fantastic costumes.

Wow that week went fast. Rebecca and everyone else involved have put together an amazing program. The tough part now is putting into practice the volumes of information they gave us.

Here's my workspace juuust before getting started painting. The dragon-hotrod on the left belongs to Derek Ring and that tiny hint of shoulder on the right is Drew Baker. As soon as my painting is dry it'll get shipped back from Massachusetts and I can finish it up. I'll post it shortly there after.

Here are three more oil sketches from the museum’s Costumed Figure sessions. The classes are three hours long leaving probably a little over two and a half hours for painting with the breaks. It’s a lot of fun but holy-crap those three hours go by quickly.

VOLTRON

I made this a little while ago for 5finity’s VOLTRON: United and Drawn art book. It was a lot of fun. The only guideline was that the image had to be somehow related to Voltron. I got my copies in the mail a couple weeks ago and I’ve got to say that they did a very nice job putting the book together.

Costumed Figure Studies

The Nevada Museum of Art has a great selection of classes and open studio sessions. We just finished a four week open studio focusing on the costumed figure. The models were great and all had a wealth of knowledge regarding the time periods and characters they were dressed as. I’m trying to get my traditional media legs back so I made an oil sketch each session. The first one was embarrassing enough to get turned upside-down and reused the second week (WWII German Medic). Warhammer Card

Another card from the same Warhammer set that I posted about earlier. Here's the other card. This armor already existed in the Warhammer universe so it was more my job to give the guy a pose and render the armor nicely enough to make it look attractive. I had a lot of fun doing it.

Here's some Lord of the Rings card art from a while ago. This is the first time I really gave Corel Painter a solid go for an image. All in all Painter is a great program but I've found that Photoshop can do most of the same things and I can move around much more quickly there.

Here's the sketch they chose (before changes). They decided they didn't want the horse, staff, or Orthanc in the image. Without those elements we decided to crop in around the central figure.

It's like Summer Art-Camp for adults that's run by a whole gaggle of illustrators I really respect (and am looking forward to meeting). I've moved past "excited" and into the realm of "crazy excited."

This is a part of level 2 from that game. It was layered out so you fly in front of some objects and behind others on your way into the ship to fight the slime boss.

Process shots are always fun. Since I just went back and did a little tweaking on an older piece I thought I'd throw the "how I got there" part in too.

Just getting an idea out at this point. Pretty clunky.

Added some canvas and started testing out color and form.

Followed that line to this point.
Wasn't sure what to do with the edges so it got that weird egg frame.

Called it good. Now that I'm looking at it again I kind of liked how the head shape in the earlier step mirrored the shape of the misty pyramid in the back. This might be one that I come back to yet again.

Now they're not just tree-people... they're the Norn from Norse mythology. They're kind of like the Fates of Greek myth, all hip to the is, was, and will be of the land. Since in Norse mythology the universe is held together by a giant world tree it made sense for these ladies with their special insight into that world to be of the tree itself.

I took an 8 week entertainment design class with Todd White. We started with silhouettes. I found it a great way to brainstorm shapes but can be a bit restrictive if you already have a solid idea of the type of character you're looking for.
